Dubai, UAE, November 20, 2013: The art of creative illumination and spectacular outdoor lighting is set to take the centrestage in Downtown Dubai, with the inaugural ‘Dubai Festival of Lights,’ from March 20 to 29, 2014.
Global property developer Emaar Properties has joined hands with the City of Lyon, renowned for its Festival of Lights, to animate its flagship mega-development billed as ‘The Centre of Now,’ with exceptionally creative thoroughfare illumination and artistic light installations.
Dubai Festival of Lights recreates the breathtaking splendour of Lyon’s Festival of Lights (Fête des Lumières de Lyon), which has set a cultural milestone through its city-wide illumination held every year around December 8, the city’s traditional celebration of light that has been turned into one of the world’s most compelling tourism attractions.
Dubai Festival of Lights, which will use energy-efficient lighting, is set to envelope the 500-acre Downtown Dubai development in a never-seen-before celebration of lights. All the iconic projects in the ‘most prestigious square kilometre on earth,’ including Burj Khalifa and The Dubai Mall, will have a brilliant new façade of festive lighting, adding to the touristic appeal of Downtown Dubai, already one of the most-visited lifestyle destinations.
Mohammed Bin Rashid Boulevard, The Dubai Fountain, Souk Al Bahar, The Address Downtown Dubai, and The Palace Downtown Dubai hotels, Burj Plaza, Emaar Square, and other key components will also wear spectacular hues of colours.
From the pathways to the Waterfront Promenade, the length and breadth of Downtown Dubai will be illuminated during the Dubai Festival of Lights, making it one of the brightest spots on earth. Each lighting installation will be undertaken by different artists, all of them with proven credentials in creating breathtaking scenery.
Ahmad Al Matrooshi, Managing Director of Emaar Properties, said: "Dubai Festival of Lights is set to be an extraordinary celebration of artistic creativity and light installations on a scale never experienced before in the region. The celebratory lighting for each building and Mohammed Bin Rashid Boulevard in Downtown Dubai will be dramatically different, creating an unmatched visual splendour, adding to its appeal as the must-visit tourism destination.
"The City of Lyon has set a global benchmark in festive lighting and we are honoured to partner with them to bring the world’s finest lighting concepts to Dubai."
Georges Képénékian, Vice-Mayor of Lyon, in charge of culture, said: "Lyon’s Festival of Lights attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors to our city every year. We are delighted to partner with Emaar and to share our technical and artistic expertise for the iconic Downtown Dubai development. The elegant architectural features of its buildings will bring an exceptional visual spectacle to Dubai. Our involvement in the artistic direction of the Dubai Festival of Lights is strong and sincere, and aims to be a long term partnership, making this new event a great success from the first edition."
Celebrating a rich history that dates back several centuries, the Festival of Lights in Lyon is a community-wide celebration now. The people of the city actively take part in brightening their homes and alleys in addition to the majestic lighting organised by the City of Lyon. A catalyst of creation, and each year, more than 120 international artists are invited to the Festival. Through their imagination and innovations, they contribute to revisiting the Lyon Heritage.
A world-class urban development that underlines Dubai’s can-do ability, Downtown Dubai continues to enthrall visitors with its festive lighting using energy-efficient decorative lights. Described as ‘The Centre of Now,’ it is also home to some of the most popular festivities that demonstrate the city’s capability to execute large-scale events, complementing the city’s ambitious bid to host the World Expo 2020.
Among the spectacular attractions hosted include The Parade, National Day, and the Downtown Dubai New Year’s Eve Gala Celebrations, while hosting numerous concerts, and the annual Emirates Classic Cars Festival.
